More about Whitstable may Day Celebrations… 2025 will be the 50th, yes, thats right, the 50th celebration that the fabulus Dixie Lee has been running! Of course Oyster Morris and the Whitstable, Herne Bay and Canterbury Lions have been a huge part of it too for most of those years and we are so happy to be planning for this amazing achievement and celebration!

If you would like to be a volunteer on the day and/or to support the fundraising ceilidhs (social dances) during the year - please do get in touch with me!

Just message Kerry on 07703 639 720

Here's what usually happens!

Whitstable May Day Celebrations on Monday 5th May. Dancing starts at the Library 10am… with the procession through the town. The Jack in the Green, with his band of musicians, Maid Marian, Robin Hood, Jim the Hooden Horse, the Hooden Stag and their lad, and Boris the Bear all come out and joins the procession at 1pm in Harbour Street dance up to the harbour, where Whitstable’s Samba Pelo Mar are playing from midday… then the procession will dance up to the Castle to sing the Whitstable May Day song at 2pm, with festivities continuing at the Castle by the fabulous Whitstable, Herne Bay & Canterbury Lions Club (stalls and entertainment all day!). Along with Whitstable May Day Morris, there will be Whitstable’s Deahorse Morris and Broomdashers, with their Jack too, CreekSide Cloggers and Captain Sam the Whitstable giant and some special guests will be performing and joining in too!!

Keep an eye out on Jack's facebook page and website for more information!

The Whitstable Jack in the Green procession is one the oldest in the country, having been revived in 1976 by Duke’s Folk, the Whitstable Folk Club. For most of its life since the revival, the procession has been organised by Dixie Lee and Oyster Morris and in conjunction with the Whitstable and Herne Bay Lions Club. Sadly, Oyster decided to hang up their hankies at the end of the dancing season in 2019. Dixie and a team are cracking on with organising the logistics of the procession – so that just leaves the fun bit - the dancing! We really hope you can join us and be part of this amazing tradition!!
